Maykel Verkuyten
Maykel Verkuyten is a full professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University and the academic director of the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER: www.ercomer.eu). By training he is a social psychologist and an anthropologist. He did his PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1988) and worked there as an assistant professor at the Law Faculty. In 1993 he moved to Utrecht University as an associate and later full professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. His main research interest is in ethnic identity and in intercultural relations. He focuses on the nature of ethnic, religious and national identities and how these relate to each other and to various outcomes, including well-being, group evaluations, and collective behaviour. Additionally, he examines interethnic ideologies (e.g., multiculturalism, interculturalism and assimilationism) and intergroup toleration as ways to manage and improve intercultural relations in plural societies.
